5 ways mindfulness can improve your English
Everyone seems to be talking about mindfulness these days, especially here in the UK!
With the fast pace of modern life; screens, devices and distractions everywhere, our minds can become overloaded with information.
This is where mindfulness can help.
Mindfulness is all about training the mind to focus on the present moment and noticing thoughts and feelings without judgement.
Meditation is the most famous form of mindfulness, but yoga, creative tasks, and even focusing on your surroundings in nature, all help you to be in the present moment.
So how can mindfulness help in developing your English skills?!
Here are 5 ways I have noticed how mindfulness can help….
1. Improved focus
The more you practise focusing your attention on the present moment, the better focus you will have on all tasks.
If you easily get distracted when you’re studying English, a daily mindfulness practice will help you stay focused when you need to study or practise English.
2. Improved recall and retention of language
Studies have also shown that regular meditation strengthens connections in the pre-frontal cortex. This area of the brain plays a role in processing and learning language.
The stronger the connections related the language, the more easily you’ll be able to recall words and phrases in conversation.
3. Improved attention
Mindfulness also makes us more attentive to the world around us. This increased attentiveness will help you to notice new words and phrases and how they are used in conversation.
This process is key to learning new vocabulary in a meaningful way so it is easier to recall.
4. Reduced stress when speaking English
Mindfulness also makes us more attentive to the world around us. This increased attentiveness will help you to notice new words and phrases and how they are used in conversation.
This process is key to learning new vocabulary in a meaningful way so it is easier to recall.
5. More confidence in your skills
When you notice your thoughts and feelings without judgement many many times, you start to see them more objectively. With time, you’ll become less judgmental towards yourself.
This means that when you make a mistake, you’ll be able to notice it without judgment, and then continue with the flow of your speech.
So mindfulness can have so many benefits on your English skills.
If you have an active mind, it won’t be easy at first. However, even just 5 minutes of mindfulness practice a day, can make a big difference to your language, and your overall well-being too. :-)
